A Puglia wedding planner for couples who want space and a long weekend

A masseria is a fortified farmhouse. It was built around a courtyard, with thick stone walls, a chapel, olive groves outside and rooms around the perimeter, which is to say it was accidentally designed to hold a three day wedding. That single building type is why the region works so well.

Puglia also stays warm later than the rest of Italy, and the sea stays warm with it. A wedding here in the first half of October still has swimming weather, which is not true of Como or of the Tuscan hills.

Four areas, close enough together that guests can see more than one.

Many masserie hold a licensed chapel or an authorised room and can host the ceremony and the reception on the same property. Combined with bedrooms on site, that produces the simplest logistics of any Italian destination we work in.

Late May and June, then September and the first half of October. That is the reliable frame, and October here behaves like September further north.

July and August are hot, dry and busy: this is where Italy goes on holiday, prices rise, and the coastal roads and towns fill up. A masseria with its own pool and sea access insulates you from most of it, but the towns will not be quiet. The scirocco can arrive at any point in the warm season, bringing heat and a fine dust from North Africa, which is a reason to think twice about a fully open ceremony site with nothing to break the wind.

Across Italy, the weddings we plan generally sit between roughly 50,000 and 500,000 euros and beyond. That is an indicative market range and not a price list: each project is quoted on its own scope.

For the same design and the same guest count, Puglia usually sits in the lower and middle part of that spread, for three reasons. Masseria rates are lower than lake villa or Amalfi hotel rates. Many properties include enough bedrooms to house a real share of your guest list, which moves cost off your guests as well as off you. And the local cost base, from produce to labour, is simply lower than in the north.

The offsetting cost is people. The very top of the Italian supplier market is concentrated in Rome and Milan, and for certain roles we bring specialists in, which means travel and accommodation. We are explicit about which roles are worth that and which are not, because in Puglia the local answer is frequently better as well as cheaper.

A civil marriage in Italy is legally recognised in the United States, and it requires a file built on both sides: a sworn declaration of no impediment made before the United States consulate in Italy, an atto notorio where the comune asks for it, apostilled birth certificates, sworn translations, and appointments at the comune before the ceremony. Pugliese comuni are small and their requirements vary between them.

A symbolic ceremony carries no legal effect and no paperwork. Most of our American couples marry at home first, then hold the real ceremony in the olive grove with a celebrant they chose, and many masserie hold a chapel or a courtyard that makes it look and feel entirely traditional. A Catholic ceremony runs through your home parish and the local diocese. Puglia is a region where parish churches are still very much parish churches, which requires respect for their own calendar.

We assemble and track the file and sit in the appointments with you. The practice belongs to the comune and the consulate, and we send you to both, because the requirements move.

Bari and Brindisi are the two airports, roughly an hour and a quarter apart by road, with the Savelletri cluster sitting between them. Neither has nonstop service from the United States. Guests connect through Rome, Milan, Munich, Zurich or London, and the second leg is short. Rome to Bari is also around four hours by high speed train, which suits guests who want a few days in Rome first.

On the ground, driving is easy for the first time on this list. Puglia is flat, the roads are wide, and the distances between a masseria, a town and a beach are fifteen to thirty minutes. Guests who rent a car will actually use it.

This is where Puglia wins outright. A masseria in the Savelletri cluster can house a large part of your guest list on the property, with the rest ten minutes away. One check in, one shuttle, one place where breakfast happens and everybody runs into each other.

For an inland Valle d’Itria wedding, guests typically split between the masseria and small hotels or trulli in Ostuni, Cisternino and Locorotondo, which is a pleasure rather than a compromise: those towns are half the reason to come.
