A real wedding at Il Casale Malatesta, where the Italian countryside becomes the backdrop for a day written in light, texture and emotion. The reception unfolds as an outdoor banquet: mint toile de Jouy, peaches and oranges laid on the linen, chandeliers arcing over the table, florals in coral and cream against rustic stone.

Zahra Studio was brought in for the table concept and the décor design rather than the planning, which is a narrower brief and a sharper one. Everything had to be decided inside the frame of one long banquet, in a courtyard that already had a strong character and no interest in being neutral.

The starting point was the toile de Jouy. A printed linen is a difficult thing to build on, because it is already a picture, and most florals placed on top of it simply argue with it. The answer was to keep the palette close and warm rather than contrasting, peach and coral against the mint, and to bring in real fruit, peaches and oranges and citrus, so that the print and the table share the same subject instead of talking over each other. Crystal chandeliers were hung above the length of the table, which is what turns an outdoor dinner into a room: the moment the light comes from overhead rather than from the sky, the guests stop being outside. Hanging crystal in a courtyard is also the part of the job nobody photographs, since every fixture has to be rigged, powered and balanced against a stone wall that was never built to carry it, and it all has to be up and lit before the first guest walks in.

From the welcome to the last toast, the rhythm is unhurried: food, music, and the small details that make guests feel held. This is the kind of wedding that honours Italian hospitality, warm, generous, unforgettable.
